Safety City

As a soon-to-be kindergartner, Madison was eligible to take the Safety City course offered through the Westerville school system. It was just like being back in school again, as she reunited with a TON of friends from her last two years of preschool! She loved that!

It was a half day program every day for two weeks, packed full of fun activities geared towards teaching everything from stranger danger, gun safety, water safety, fire and electricity, to calling 911, knowing her address/phone number, riding bikes safely, crossing streets, etc. She took a field trip to the local firestation, with the most important part of that field trip for Madison because she got to ride on an actual yellow school bus, with no seat belts! They also walked to a busy intersection and observed how the traffic light and pedestrian lights work. In addition, every morning when we arrived at safety city, there was something fun greeting us. A team of officers from the Westerville police department was there for the duration of the program and they always had either a remote control police car ("PC"), fire hydrant ("Franky") or a big (costume) dalmation ("Sparky") welcoming the kids to the day at safety city. Nathan LOVED drop off every morning, excited to see what each morning held for him! At the end of the two weeks, they held a graduation for all the kids, making a big deal about what they had learned, singing songs, getting a "diploma". It was adorable!

Each day during safety city, they spent time in "Safety Town" learning how to ride bikes safely, cross streets, look for traffic, etc. I think it was the kids' favorite part!
